How to Install Vinyl Plank Flooring

Vinyl plank flooring is a cost-effective, durable, and versatile flooring option that can emulate the look of hardwood, tile, and stone. Installing it yourself can save you money and give you a sense of accomplishment. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to install vinyl plank flooring:

Materials and Tools

Before getting started, gather the following materials and tools:

  • Vinyl planks
  • Underlayment
  • Moisture barrier (if necessary)
  • Spacers
  • Utility knife
  • Tape measure
  • Level
  • Hammer
  • Pry bar
  • Circular saw or miter saw

Preparation

1. Remove existing flooring and baseboards.

2. Clean the subfloor and ensure it's level and free of debris.

3. If the subfloor is uneven, install a self-leveling underlayment to create a smooth surface.

4. Roll out a moisture barrier if necessary, such as in areas prone to moisture.

Underlayment Installation

1. Start in a corner of the room and roll out the underlayment.

2. Cut the underlayment to fit the shape of the room.

3. Tape the seams of the underlayment together.

Vinyl Plank Installation

1. Determine the direction of the planks. This can be the length of the room, diagonal, or even a herringbone pattern.

2. Start installing the planks from a corner of the room. Leave a 1/4-inch gap around the perimeter for expansion.

3. Lock the first two planks together by aligning the tongue and groove edges and gently tapping them together. Use a hammer if necessary.

4. Continue adding planks in rows, making sure they are aligned and locked together tightly.

5. Cut planks to fit around obstacles, such as doorways and cabinets. Use a circular saw or miter saw for precise cuts.

Finishing

1. Once the entire floor is covered, inspect the perimeter and cut away any excess vinyl.

2. Reinstall the baseboards and any other moldings.

3. Clean the floor thoroughly and allow it to dry.

Maintenance

To maintain your vinyl plank flooring, follow these tips:

  • Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove dirt and debris.
  • Mop with warm water and a mild detergent as needed.
  • Avoid using abrasive cleaners or scouring pads.
  • Protect the floor from heavy furniture with felt pads.
