Installing Laminate Flooring On Concrete: An Easy Step-By-Step Guide

Laminate flooring is a popular choice for DIY enthusiasts due to its ease of installation and durability. If you're planning to install laminate flooring on a concrete subfloor, here's a step-by-step guide to help you complete the project successfully:

1. Prepare the Concrete Subfloor

The first step is to prepare the concrete subfloor by ensuring it is level, clean, and dry. Use a moisture meter to check the moisture content of the concrete. It should be below 12% before installing laminate flooring.

If the concrete is uneven, use a self-leveling compound to smooth it out. Fill any cracks or gaps with a concrete patching compound. Once the repairs are complete, sweep the concrete floor to remove any dust or debris.

2. Install an Underlayment

An underlayment provides a moisture barrier between the concrete and the laminate flooring. It also helps to reduce noise and improve the feel of the floor underfoot. Install the underlayment according to the manufacturer's instructions, making sure to overlap the seams by at least 6 inches.

3. Determine the Starting Point

To ensure a straight installation, determine the center point of the room and make a chalk line perpendicular to the longest wall. This will be your starting point for laying the laminate flooring.

4. Install the First Row of Planks

Start by installing the first plank along the chalk line. Use spacers to maintain a consistent gap between the wall and the planks. Lock the planks together using the tongue-and-groove system.

For the last plank in the first row, measure the remaining space and cut a plank to fit. Use a pull bar or tapping block to gently tap the plank into place.

5. Continue Installing the Planks

Repeat step 4 to continue installing the laminate flooring rows. Stagger the end joints of the planks in each row to create a more stable and visually appealing installation.

6. Cut Around Obstructions

When you encounter obstructions such as door frames or pipes, measure and cut the planks to fit around them. Use a jigsaw or a circular saw to make precise cuts.

7. Install the Last Row of Planks

The last row of planks may need to be cut to fit. Measure the gap between the wall and the last plank and cut it accordingly. Use a tapping block to gently tap the plank into place, making sure to leave a small gap at the wall.

8. Install Transition Moldings

Install transition moldings around the perimeter of the room to cover the gap between the laminate flooring and the wall or other flooring surfaces. Choose transition moldings that match the color and style of your laminate flooring.

9. Enjoy Your New Floor

Congratulations! You have successfully installed laminate flooring on concrete. Clean the floor with a manufacturer-approved cleaner and enjoy the beauty and durability of your new floor.

Tips for Successful Installation

  • Use a flooring pull bar or tapping block to gently tap the planks into place. Avoid using a hammer or mallet as it can damage the planks.
  • Leave a small gap (approximately 1/4 inch) around the perimeter of the room to allow for expansion and contraction.
  • Do not install laminate flooring in areas with high moisture levels, such as bathrooms or laundry rooms.
  • Clean the floor regularly using a manufacturer-approved cleaner to maintain its beauty and longevity.
  • Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully to ensure a successful installation.
