How to Level OSB Subfloor for Vinyl Plank Flooring

Installing vinyl plank flooring over an OSB subfloor can enhance the aesthetic appeal and durability of your home. However, ensuring a level subfloor is crucial for a flawless installation and long-lasting flooring. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to level an OSB subfloor for vinyl plank flooring:

Materials Required:

  • Leveling compound
  • Mixing paddle
  • Notched trowel
  • Smoothing trowel
  • Durock feather finish (optional)
  • Primer (optional)

Step 1: Prepare the Subfloor

Remove any existing flooring, baseboards, and debris. Inspect the OSB subfloor for any damage or irregularities. If there are any loose or protruding nails, hammer them down or remove them.

Step 2: Check for Levelness

Using a level, check the subfloor for any high or low spots. If the subfloor is uneven by more than 1/4 inch over a 10-foot span, leveling is necessary.

Step 3: Use a Leveling Compound

Mix the leveling compound according to the manufacturer's instructions. Pour the compound onto the subfloor in the areas that need leveling. Use a notched trowel to spread the compound evenly, working from the center outward.

Step 4: Smooth the Compound

Use a smoothing trowel to smooth out the leveling compound, ensuring a flat and consistent surface. Allow the compound to dry completely, following the manufacturer's recommended drying time.

Step 5: Feather Finish (Optional)

Apply Durock feather finish over the joints between the subfloor and any walls or obstacles. This will create a smooth transition and prevent any ridges or bumps under the vinyl plank flooring.

Step 6: Prime the Subfloor (Optional)

Some vinyl plank manufacturers recommend priming the subfloor to improve adhesion and prevent moisture problems. Apply a latex-based primer and allow it to dry before installing the vinyl plank flooring.

Step 7: Check for Levelness Again

Once the subfloor is completely dry, recheck it for levelness. Ensure that the surface is within 1/8 inch of flatness over a 6-foot span.

Tips:

  • Use a self-leveling compound for larger areas or uneven surfaces.
  • Allow the leveling compound to cure completely before proceeding with installation.
  • Wear protective gear such as gloves and safety glasses when handling leveling compounds.
  • li>If the subfloor is significantly uneven or damaged, it may require professional assistance.
By following these steps, you can effectively level an OSB subfloor and prepare it for the installation of vinyl plank flooring. A level subfloor will ensure a smooth, uniform, and long-lasting flooring surface.
