How to Seamlessly Install Vinyl Plank Flooring on Shower Walls

Transforming your shower walls with stylish and waterproof vinyl plank flooring is an achievable DIY project that can enhance the aesthetics and functionality of your bathroom. Follow these comprehensive steps to guide you through the essential aspects of installing vinyl plank flooring on shower walls:

1. Prepare the Walls

Begin by ensuring that the shower walls are clean, dry, and free of dust, grease, and mold. Remove any existing fixtures, such as soap dishes or towel bars, and seal any cracks or holes with silicone caulk. For optimal adhesion, sand any glossy or uneven surfaces to create a slightly rough texture.

2. Install the Starting Strip

Attach a level starting strip around the perimeter of the shower walls, approximately 1/2 inch above the floor. Use a construction adhesive or screws to secure the starting strip firmly in place. This strip will provide a stable base for the first row of vinyl planks.

3. Apply Adhesive to the Walls

Spread a thin layer of high-quality construction adhesive evenly across the wall surface, starting from the bottom and working your way up. Use a trowel or notched spatula to create a smooth and consistent adhesive layer. Avoid applying too much adhesive, as this can cause the vinyl planks to buckle or shift.

4. Install the First Row of Planks

With the adhesive in place, position the first vinyl plank in the starting strip and gently press it down into the adhesive. Continue installing subsequent planks alongside the first row, ensuring that they are tightly joined together and aligned with the starting strip.

5. Stagger the Planks

To enhance the strength and durability of the flooring, stagger the joints between the vinyl planks. Start the second row with a plank that is cut to approximately half the length of the first plank. This will create a staggered pattern that mimics the appearance of real wood planks.

6. Apply Adhesive to the Planks

Before installing each vinyl plank, apply a thin strip of construction adhesive directly to the back of the plank. This additional adhesive layer will ensure a secure bond with the wall surface and prevent the planks from lifting or shifting.

7. Continue Installing the Planks

Continue installing the vinyl planks row by row, staggering the joints and applying adhesive to the planks and the wall surface. Use a tapping block and rubber mallet to gently tap the planks into place, ensuring they are firmly seated in the adhesive.

8. Trim the Excess

Once all the vinyl planks are installed, remove the starting strip and trim any excess flooring around the edges of the shower. Use a sharp utility knife to score the planks and snap them off along the cut line.

9. Seal the Seams

To create a waterproof seal, apply a silicone caulk along all the seams where the vinyl planks meet. Use a caulk gun to inject the caulk into the seams and smooth it out with a damp finger or caulk tool.

10. Install Base Molding

Optional but recommended, install base molding around the bottom edge of the flooring to conceal the cut edge of the planks and provide an elegant finishing touch. Use construction adhesive to secure the base molding in place.
