How to Level Particle Board Floor
Particle board flooring is a popular choice for homeowners because it is affordable, easy to install, and can be made to look like more expensive materials such as wood or tile. However, particle board flooring can also be uneven, which can make it difficult to walk on and can damage furniture. If you have uneven particle board flooring, you can level it yourself using a few simple tools and materials.
Tools and Materials
- Level
- Carpenter's square
- Circular saw
- Jigsaw
- Sandpaper
- Wood filler
- Caulk gun
- Caulk
Instructions
- Start by using a level to find the highest point on the floor. This will be the point that you will use to level the rest of the floor.
- Once you have found the highest point, use a carpenter's square to draw a line around the perimeter of the room, 1 inch below the highest point. This line will be your guide for cutting the particle board.
- Use a circular saw to cut the particle board along the line that you drew in the previous step. Be sure to wear safety glasses and hearing protection when using power tools.
- Once you have cut the particle board, use a jigsaw to cut out any obstacles, such as door frames or pipes.
- Sand the edges of the particle board to smooth them out.
- Apply wood filler to any holes or gaps in the particle board. Allow the wood filler to dry completely.
- Use a caulk gun to apply caulk around the perimeter of the room, where the particle board meets the wall. This will help to seal the floor and prevent moisture from getting in.
- Allow the caulk to dry completely, and then you can enjoy your newly leveled particle board floor!
Tips
- If you are not comfortable using power tools, you can rent them from a home improvement store.
- Be sure to wear safety glasses and hearing protection when using power tools.
- If you have a large area to level, you may want to rent a floor sander to make the job easier.
- Leveling particle board flooring is a relatively simple project that can be completed in a weekend.
