How to Remove Black Mastic from Concrete Floors

Black mastic, commonly known as cutback adhesive, is a sticky and tenacious substance often used to adhere flooring materials to concrete subfloors. Removing it can be a daunting task, but with the right tools and techniques, you can restore your concrete floor to its original condition.

Materials You'll Need:

  • Concrete floor cleaner or degreaser
  • Stiff-bristled scrub brush
  • Floor scraper
  • Putty knife
  • Mineral spirits
  • Clean rags or towels
  • Safety glasses and gloves

Instructions:

1. Clean and Degrease the Floor: Apply a concrete floor cleaner or degreaser to the mastic-covered area and let it sit for the recommended amount of time. This will help loosen the adhesive's grip on the concrete.

2. Scrub the Mastic: Using a stiff-bristled scrub brush, vigorously scrub the mastic in circular motions. This will loosen even more of the adhesive and create a slurry.

3. Scrape Away the Slurry: Use a floor scraper to scrape away the loosened mastic slurry. Apply even pressure to the scraper and avoid gouging the concrete.

4. Remove Stubborn Residue: For stubborn mastic residue that remains after scraping, use a putty knife to carefully pry it up. Hold the putty knife at a shallow angle to prevent scratching the concrete.

5. Dissolve Remaining Adhesive: If there is still mastic residue left, apply mineral spirits to a clean rag and wipe it over the area. Mineral spirits will dissolve the adhesive, making it easier to remove.

6. Rinse and Clean: Once all the mastic is removed, rinse the floor thoroughly with clean water to remove any residue. Dry the floor completely with clean rags or towels.

Tips for Success:

  • Wear safety glasses and gloves for protection.
  • Test the concrete floor cleaner or degreaser in an inconspicuous area before applying it to the entire floor.
  • Be patient and work in small sections to avoid overwhelming yourself.
  • If the mastic is particularly thick or old, you may need to repeat the scraping and dissolving process several times.
  • Once the mastic is removed, consider applying a floor sealer to protect the concrete from future stains or spills.
